A $100,000 mistake…
In 2014, Visionworks experienced two data breaches that impacted over 120,000 individuals.
As encrypted servers were being upgraded, the first incident involved a mistakenly discarded
server containing the Protected Health Information of approximately 75,000 individuals.
The second incident impacted about 45,000 records. Although there was little risk to the breach
victims in either case, there was a violation of the HIPAA Security Rule and safeguards,
which led to Visionworks having to pay a $100K data breach settlement.
